GIANT FOOD STORES AND MARTIN’S FOOD MARKETS DONATE $27 MILLION IN 2014
Supported efforts to fight hunger and help kids in local communities served
Carlisle, PA – GIANT Food Stores and MARTIN’S Food Markets today announced its charitable donations made in 2014 totaled $27 million in combined cash and product contributions from customers, vendors and associates. As part of its ongoing better neighbor and responsible retailing efforts, GIANT/MARTIN’S is committed to supporting organizations that help eradicate hunger and improve the quality of life for children throughout the communities it serves.
“These are extraordinary results that reflect the deep heritage and commitment our associates have to helping our neighbors,” said Tom Lenkevich, president, GIANT/MARTIN’S. “Thank you to our associates, customers, and vendors who joined with us in 2014 to support hunger relief efforts while doing all we can to help the youngest residents of our communities – our kids.”
As a food retailer, GIANT/MARTIN’S recognizes the important role it can play in hunger relief efforts and in 2014 donations to regional food bank partners and local pantries accounted for 45% or $12.2 million of the overall donations. Of the total hunger-related donation amount, approximately 86% came from safe consumable food donations, such as frozen meat and bakery items to regional food bank partners. With GIANT/MARTIN’S Meat the Needs program, the grocer freezes meat that would otherwise go unsold, but is still safe to consume, and donates it to regional food bank partners. In 2014, over one million pounds of meat were diverted from landfills and onto the plates of those in need.
In 2014, GIANT/MARTIN’S customers, associates and vendors also came together to help donate hope and create miracles for children throughout its operating area by funding state-of-the-art medical care, life-saving research and preventative education at local Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals. A total of $3.5 million was raised in 2014. Since 1996, GIANT/MARTIN’S has donated more than $37 million to local CMN hospitals, making them one of the top 10 fundraisers in the country for CMN. GIANT/MARTIN’S also ranks #2 in per-store fundraising for CMN in the country.
GIANT/MARTIN’S is also committed to helping kids in education with its A+ School Rewards program. More than 2,000 public and private schools received $3 million during the 2013-14 school year to fund scholarship programs, technology equipment and other educational needs. Since A+ School Rewards launched in 2005, more than $19 million has been donated to local schools.
In addition to its efforts to fight hunger and help kids, GIANT/MARTIN’S customers and associates also showed their support for local men and women serving in the Armed Forces by generously donating more than $560,000 through the annual Support Our Troops campaign which benefits regional USOs and the Wounded Warrior Project.
GIANT/MARTIN’S also committed more than $7.7 million in contributions to local community groups and various nonprofit organizations throughout its market area, impacting tens of thousands of individuals and families.
