GIANT FOOD STORES DONATES 25 BENCHES TO RABBITTRANSIT FOR EARTH DAY
Carlisle, PA – In recognition of Earth Day, today GIANT Food Stores donated 25 benches made from recycled plastic bags to rabbittransit of the York Adams Transportation Authority to assist with local beautification efforts. This donation is part of GIANT’s ongoing Bags to Benches initiative.
“At GIANT, we are doing our part to be good stewards of the earth,” said Christopher Brand, manager, public and community relations. “Instead of plastic grocery bags ending up in landfills or littering our green spaces, we encourage customers to return them to their local GIANT and help us turn more bags into benches.”
By 2020, GIANT has set a goal of getting to “zero waste,” diverting 90% of waste going into landfills and incineration through the expansion of recycling programs. Customers can bring their plastic bags to any GIANT store and place in the recycling bins found near the front entrance. The bags are then turned into park benches. It takes more than 12,000 plastic bags to make one park bench. Since 1997, more than 1,700 benches have been donated to local fire departments, churches, schools, townships, parks and playgrounds. In 2015, a total of 50 benches will be donated to help beautify the communities in which the stores operate.
“Public transportation is a green industry and we live Earth Day every day,” said Richard Farr, executive director, rabbittransit. “Last year we traveled almost 4 million miles to help reduce congestion and lower others’ carbon footprints. For us, these benches are a much deserved reward to our passengers to have a seat during their daily commute as they travel to jobs, doctors’ offices or the grocery store.”
