GIANT Food Stores Donates 1,000 Turkeys to Central Pennsylvania Food Bank

(Harrisburg, PA) – The holiday season is a time for families to gather together for a traditional holiday meal. However, for many families in central PA, the means to afford that meal doesn’t exist. To help those families, each year the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank conducts an annual Holiday Turkey Drive to provide turkeys, and holiday meals, to the thousands of individuals and families receiving food assistance from the Food Bank. As part of GIANT Food Stores’ Great Turkey Give Back campaign, GIANT will help kick-off the Holiday Turkey Drive with a donation of 1,000 frozen turkeys. With a goal of receiving 5,000 donated turkeys this year, GIANT’s donation will greatly enhance the efforts of the Food Bank to supply turkeys to families struggling with hunger during the holiday season.

The Food Bank is asking the public to help meet some of that demand by donating frozen turkeys, along with canned fruit/vegetables, instant stuffing, canned/dry gravy mix, and canned pie filling. By making a donation of a turkey and the items that make a holiday meal, you are not only providing nourishment, but memories that will last a lifetime and you will help us reach our goal of providing a holiday meal for everyone in central PA.

“Many people look forward to sharing a holiday meal with family and friends during the holiday season,” stated Food Bank Executive Director Joe Arthur. “For those who are hungry, Thanksgiving is just another day of struggling to feed their families. This donation by GIANT Food Stores will give a thousand families and individuals the memory of a traditional holiday meal that they would not have otherwise.”

For the past 15 years, GIANT Food Stores has contributed 1,000 frozen turkeys to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s Annual Turkey Drive. “The fight against hunger occurs year round for many in our local communities and GIANT’S Great Turkey Give Back helps to provide a holiday meal for those who may have otherwise gone without,” said John MacDonald, GIANT’s director of marketing and external communications. “As part of our company’s ongoing better neighbor efforts and in the spirit of giving this holiday season, GIANT is excited to donate more than 3,500 turkeys companywide to kick-start holiday food drives for our regional food bank partners, like the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank.”

The Food Bank distributes frozen turkeys (as well as all of the side dishes that make a holiday meal complete) to hungry families during the holiday season, through a network of agencies in 27 Pennsylvania counties. Non-profit partners such as soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters and senior citizen programs will either directly distribute the turkeys or prepare turkeys on-site to serve their clients.

The public can donate frozen turkeys, as well as the ingredients for side dishes at the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank office at 3908 Corey Road, Harrisburg, Monday through Friday during normal business hours, 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., and the following Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon: November 1, 8, 15 & 22 and December 6, 13 and 20.

Area GIANT Food Stores shoppers may also request that their BonusCard Turkey ExtraReward certificates be donated to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank at their local GIANT, or they may mail their certificate directly to the Food Bank at 3908 Corey Road, Harrisburg, PA 17109.
