GIANT TO GRAND OPEN STORES IN FIVE GREATER PHILADELPHIA COMMUNITIES ON JULY 8

Carlisle, PA – The first five former Genuardi’s will open under the GIANT banner on Sunday, July 8 at 8:00 a.m. The stores located in Huntingdon Valley, Jamison, Kennett Square, North Wales, and West Chester, Pennsylvania were closed for the past week as each store underwent a multi-million dollar remodel and update of amenities. GIANT Food Stores recently acquired fifteen supermarkets from Genuardi’s Family Markets, a subsidiary of Safeway Inc. in the greater Philadelphia area.

The stores re-opening on July 8 include:

  • 737 Huntingdon Pike, Huntingdon Valley, PA
  • 2395 York Road, Jamison, PA
  • 830 E. Baltimore Pike, Kennett Square, PA
  • 467 Sumneytown Pike, North Wales, PA
  • 1375 Boot Road, West Chester, PA

“It’s an exciting time for all of our store teams as we look forward to opening the doors and introducing the GIANT shopping experience to each community,” said Rick Herring, president. “There are plenty of unique new features in each store, providing a greater assortment of products, freshly prepared foods, and savings in every aisle.”

With the remodels, key departments such as produce, bakery, deli, meat and seafood have been updated to provide a clean look. “While all store aisles have been updated with new signage, we’ve worked hard to keep products in the same general location. At the same time, we will be bringing an improved selection to customers across the store,” continued Herring.

GIANT has a deep commitment to buying local and will continue to feature locally grown produce in all of its stores. The produce department will feature a dramatic increase in variety along with the finest, fresh-from-the-field fruits, herbs, and vegetables.

Emphasizing GIANT’s ongoing dedication to health and wellness, customers will find an assortment of natural and organic products in a dedicated section which includes more than 2,500 frozen, dairy, grocery, gluten-free, and special diet selections. GIANT’s full-service pharmacies are staffed with knowledgeable pharmacists available to fill prescriptions along with providing informational materials about healthy living, disease and diet. GIANT pharmacies will offer more than 300 generic prescriptions for under $10 in addition to providing customers with a 14-day supply of over 30 different generic antibiotics for free, with a valid prescription. The Health and Beauty Care department offers the effect of shopping in a drugstore for all of a customer’s health and beauty needs but at prices lower than most chain drugstores.

Thousands of GIANT’s own brand and national brand perishable and nonperishable products feature GIANT’s exclusive Healthy IdeasTM product labeling system. Blue and green Healthy Ideas shelf tags help customers identify healthy options as they shop the aisles.

GIANT has also installed state-of-the-art technology to provide added convenience for shoppers. Self-checkouts, known as EasyScan, have been added to the West Chester, Huntingdon Valley, and Jamison locations. EasyWeigh scales enable customers to weigh their produce, bulk food and other items making checkout quick and easy. GIANT’S award-winning Shopping Solutions kiosks, which are conveniently located throughout the store, enable customers to use the interactive touch-screen to check personalized BonusCard savings offers, print off coupons, find meal recipes and locate an item in the store.

GIANT has also hired 1,700 associates in total from Genuardi’s to provide customers with the same friendly faces and high level of customer service they have come to expect while shopping. Associates will be at the ready to introduce former Genuardi’s customers to the GIANT BonusCard. The BonusCard offers customers automatic access to thousands of savings every time they shop plus Gas Extra Rewards. For every $100 spent on food purchases and out of pocket pharmacy purchases using a BonusCard, customers receive ten cents off per gallon of gas during promotional periods. The current promotion allows customers to earn and redeem points through August 18.

As GIANT continues its multi-million dollar investment in the greater Philadelphia market, five Genuardi’s stores at a time will continue to temporarily close for one week, but pharmacies and banks will remain open for customer convenience. GIANT will complete the conversion of all 15 stores on July 22. The extent of the remodels and addition of new amenities will vary by store.

Grand Opening Giveaways

In celebration of each of the grand openings, customers can enjoy special grand opening savings and giveaways on July 8, including:

  • The first 200 customers will receive a six-pack of GIANT brand English Muffins and a GIANT reusable shopping bag.
  • The first 500 customers who check out will receive a free loaf of Sara Lee bread.
